About Niche Topics

Is it true that beet (beetroot) juice helps cure acne? I've really oily skin and acne all over my face, especially on my cheeks and chin. A friend told me that drinking beet juice will clear up pimple and acne breakouts fast without irritating the skin. I'd love to have proactiv acne treatments, but I can't afford them and I'm so tired of being the ugly girl among my friends! Please help, I'm willing to try any natural home remedies to get rid of my acne problem. – Jennifer, Florida.

Beet Juice Acne Home Treatment

Hi Jennifer,

Beetroot (or beet) is extremely good for your skin, and it's also one of the best natural home remedies to treat pimples and acne safely without spending too much money on anti-acne creams and products.

This beautiful, ruby red root vegetable is brimming with a wide variety of skin-enhancing nutrients and powerful antioxidants –  A, B and C Vitamins, sulfur, iron and copper, to name a few – that can help fight acne from the inside out and keep your skin healthy.

Beetroots have been widely recognized as a superfood food due to its remarkable cleansing powers to purify the blood and eliminate harmful toxins that can contribute to acne. Beets are rich in a substance called betaine, which is shown to provide anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and detox benefits by stimulating liver to produce more bile.

As such, beetroot juice can be used as an effective and natural home treatment to heal skin blemishes while rejuvenating skin cells and make acne a thing of the past very quickly.

Before you jump into beet juice acne home remedy treatment, it's always a good idea to look at any possible side effects.

You should avoid the overuse of beet juice as it may lead to a condition called methemoglobinemia, which causes the blood cells to lose oxygen-carrying capacity.

In addition, consuming large amounts of beet or beet juice may cause low level of calcium in the bloodstream (hypocalcemia) and possible kidney problems (if you prone to calcium oxalate stone formation) because of its high oxalate content.

Take note that eating beet or drinking beet juice can temporarily discolor your stools or cause your urine or to turn red or pink in color (beeturia). This is a harmless side effect and nothing to be worried about.

How to Use Beetroot to Cure Acne and Pimples?

1. Beetroot juice is very strong so you want to dilute it at least 4 times with other milder vegetable or fruit juices such as celery, cucumber, orange, pineapple, carrot or apple. I like mine with carrot and apple. Carrot is crammed with beta-carotene which is necessary in controlling acne, while apple helps to reduce acne inflammation.

2. You can also mix beet juice with mango juice, papaya juice, carrot juice and cabbage juice. Consuming this juice regularly will help keep your body healthy and slow down premature skin aging caused by environmentally stresses such as pollution and sun damage.

3.  If you don't have a juicer, try this method. Place 1 beet (smaller ones are sweeter) in a small saucepan cover with water and bring to a boil. Let it cool and drink the beetroot water. This helps get rid of acne from within and make your skin clear without redness, dryness, blotchiness or other side effects usually associated with topical acne treatments.

You can also apply beetroot water externally to areas where you've acne and pimples to relieve skin irritation that is caused by pimples.

4. Some acne sufferers swear by placing thin slices of beetroot on the face to heal pimples and prevent them from coming back.

5. Making beetroot juice with your juicer can be rather messy and time consuming, I'd suggest you consider beetroot powder, which can be found in most health food stores and selected grocery stores, locally or online. Simply add 1 teaspoon beetroot powder to water, stir well and enjoy. How convenient!

What Other Home Remedies Can Help Acne and Acne Scars?

1. Garlic Acne Home Treatment

Garlic is also a good acne treatment option as it contains sulfur, a naturally potent antibiotic that kills the acne bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes or P. acnes) before it can lead to blackheads, and pimples.

Simply take a clove of fresh garlic and peel its outer skin. Lightly rub fresh garlic on your acne spots and acne scars. Wait for about 10-15 minutes before rinsing your face with lukewarm water. If it stings, wash it out immediately.

For best results, repeat garlic acne home remedy for 1-2 weeks. You'll notice a change in your skin. Not only will your acne spots and acne scars disappear and become less visible, your skin will also feel totally clean and healthy.

2. Honey Acne Natural Remedy

Another simple and highly popular acne home treatment is raw honey. Honey works miraculously well to heal acne because it contains anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to prevent bacteria build up and acne breakout. Further, honey nourishes your skin, leaving it baby soft and smooth for that gorgeous radiant glow.

Place 1 tablespoon honey (preferably manuka honey since it's proven to have an antibacterial potency 10 to 50 times more powerful than regular honey) in a small bowl. Add a pinch of cinnamon powder, and mix well to form a paste.

Generously apply honey-cinnamon paste to acne affected areas, carefully avoiding your eyes. Leave on for face overnight to allow honey to work deeply into the pores and destroy the growth of acne causing bacteria.
