7 Best Ways to Fade and Remove Freckles Naturally

By Tiffany Moore

When I was growing up, I got teased a lot about having a face full of freckles, and I hated them. They were not those cute little light brown spots peppered like Evangeline Lily’s, mine were really icky. There are many home remedies on how to fade or get rid of freckles, and I have tried several of these skin lightening recipes. And, here are the best ways to lighten freckles naturally.

Home Remedies to Get Rid of Freckles

Lemon, Orange or Lime Juice for Best Freckle Removal

Combine the juice of any one of these citrus fruits with a little plain yogurt, mix well to get a paste.

Apply on your clean face and leave it on to dry, about 15 minutes. Wash off with cold water. The juice acts as a natural bleaching agent, and will help lighten freckles over time.

You want to use only real lemon juice. Those fake concentrate that comes in a bottle or a plastic container shaped like a lemon contain additives and preservatives that may not be suitable to be used on your face.

Remove Freckles Using Radish

You can fade freckles by rubbing radish on problem areas. Grate 1 radish, and add the juice of 1 lime. Blend well and apply all over your face.

Leave the mixture to dry and then rub vigorously before rinsing to remove freckles. Radish and lime not only lightens the freckles naturally but also have exfoliating properties to remove blackheads.

Mint and Banana to Get Rid of Freckles

Mint leaves are also great for fading freckles without chemicals. Grind 3-4 mint leaves until you get a paste. Add 1 cut-up banana and blend both ingredients in a blender.

Apply all over your face, avoiding the eye area. With regular use, you should get rid of freckles and remove blemishes as well.

Lighten Freckles with Eggplant

Eggplant is another effective home remedy that helps fade freckles on your skin. Slice 1 eggplant, and lay the eggplant slices on your freckles.

Then rub them in a circular motion, and leave the eggplant slices to work for 3-5 minutes. Be sure to use this natural freckle removal treatment everyday and you will see the freckles fading day by day, and lightened considerably after 2 weeks.

Cranberry or Strawberry for Natural Freckle Treatment

Berries are also helpful in lightening brown freckles. Crush some cranberries or strawberries, and rub them on the spots.

Let it dry on the face naturally before washing off with cold water. Regular use makes the freckles lighter and go away quickly.

Get Rid of Freckles with Lemon Juice and Boric Acid

Dissolve 1 teaspoon boric acid in 1 cup hot water. Add juice of 1 lemon, 2 tablespoons rose water and ½  tablespoon glycerin. Mix all ingredients well and store the solution in a glass jar.

To use, simply dab the solution on your freckles using a cotton ball. Leave it on for a few minutes, and then rinse off with water.

If you also apply this freckle removal home remedy on your neck and shoulders, you will notice that your skin becomes radiantly fair and baby smooth.

Sour Cream to Fade Freckles Naturally

Apply a thin layer of sour cream on your face but don’t rinse the face mask off completely. Instead, gently wipe off with a soft tissue and apply your favorite moisturizer.

Prevent Freckles Formation

As a preventive measure, make sure to use a sunscreen or sunblock of at least SPF 30 on your face. You can also wear a broad-brimmed hat to keep the sun from hitting the face directly, and avoid sun exposure between 10 am to 4 pm.

Take note that a freckle lightening recipe may work on some whereas the same freckle removal treatment may irritate some people’s skin. So you need to try and see which home remedy works best for you, and be patient.

The most common complaint I often hear about home remedies is they take a bit longer time to show results. If patience is not one of your virtues, you might want to consider specially formulated fade creams (bleach creams, skin whitening essences, etc) to help reduce the color of freckles in as little as 14 days, and not to mention, stop freckles from clustering together.

There are heaps of products around that claim to boost skin renewal and treat uneven skin pigmentation disorders. But, how do you know what freckle removal products are safe and right for you, and which ones you must avoid, no matter how appealing the advertisement might be?

One controversial and dangerous ingredient to watch out for is mercury, a toxic heavy metal. It can be highly effective against stubborn age spots and freckles because it blocks the production of melanin, which gives your skin its color. However, mercury is linked to a slew of damaging side effects, ranging from numbness, tingling in limbs, dizziness, headaches, memory loss to depression. In excess, it can even cause kidney failure.

As a rule, avoid skin lightening creams that are either white or yellow in color as it can indicate the presence of mercury. Also, be very careful of unlabeled skin whitening products from dubious sources, like those manufactured in Mexico and China.

So what are the safe ingredients to look out for when buying fade freckles cream? Other than Vitamins A, C, E, lemon juice extract, mulberry extract, papain (enzyme in papaya), glycolic and lactic acid have also been widely used as skin lighteners to tackle brown patches. In addition, keep an eye for these freckle-removal ingredients on the product label:

1. Alpha Arbutin. A skin brightener research-proven to have more powerful inhibitory actions than beta arbutin, commonly known as Bearberry extract, for the treatment of skin problems such as hyperpigmentation, melasma, chloasma, freckles and age spots.

2. Gigawhite. A plant-derived skin lightener often used as a safer alternative to hydroquinone. It has been shown to diminish brown pigment spots in a 12 week “in vivo” study with regular use.

3. Kojic Acid. A non toxic, natural ingredient that comes from Japanese mushroom, extremely helpful as a skin lightening agent by inhibiting melanin production.

4. Licorice Extract. Glabridin, the main active ingredient present in licorice extract for skin bleaching, suppresses pigmentation by reducing tyrosinase activation, which leads to melanin build-up in the skin.

5. Allantonin. Extracted from the comfrey plant, allantonin boosts excellent keratolytic effects on the skin. What this means is, allantonin gently sloughs off layers of dead skin cells, to reveal smoother and lighter skin tone while restoring clarity.

Having said that, you might want to check out Fade Out Original Moisturising Cream that is hugely popular with the budget-conscious. If you have deep pockets, try Skinbright Premium Skin Brightener (Premium Naturals), Revitol Skin Brightener, Meladerm Cream (Civant Skincare), or Nano DNA (Dr Mourad).
