Cure Sleep Apnea Naturally with Home Remedies

By Diane Hanson

Sleep apnea, also known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is a common disorder that affects more than 18 million Americans. A majority of these people may not even know that they have sleep apnea because they are normally unaware of the surroundings whilst they sleep.

It is usually the bed partner or room mates who point out the disorder. Although sleep apnea generally does not pose an immediate problem, it is still considered to be a serious condition.

If left untreated, sleep apnea can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases.

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles in the back of your throat relax. These muscles support the soft palate, the triangular piece of tissue hanging from the soft palate (uvula), the tonsils and the tongue.

When you sleep, the muscles relax and if you have sleep apnea, your muscles over-relax resulting in the airway becoming restricted or blocked.

For a certain period of time breathing stops and the amount of oxygen in the blood is reduced. Your brain senses this inability to breathe and briefly wakes you from sleep so that you can reopen your airway.

You can awaken with a transient shortness of breath that corrects itself quickly, within 1 or 2 deep breaths, although this seldom occurs. You may make a snorting, choking or gasping sound. This pattern can repeat itself 5 to 30 times or more each hour, all night long.

These disruptions keeps you from getting deep, restful phases of sleep, and you will probably feel sleepy and unrefreshed, including falling asleep during the day.

Sleep apnea can also arise if you have enlarged tissues, such as enlarged tonsils or adenoids. During sleep, the tonsils push the airway, which causes the airway to narrow and obstruct the opening of the windpipe.

How to Treat Sleep Apnea Naturally with Home Remedies

1. Overweight people have an increased chance of suffering from sleep apnea. Extra soft fatty cells can thicken the windpipe's wall and narrow the interior of the airway opening.

If your sleep apnea is caused by obesity, consider the correlation between these two conditions, and try to lose weight. Even a 10% weight reduction of your weight can lower the incidence of sleep apnea and improve sleep quality.

2. Alcohol, nicotine and other drugs influence the brain, which stimulates respiration. This may cause relaxed breathing muscles and a blockage of the airways, and encourages snoring.

Avoiding alcohol and nicotine in the 4 to 6 hours before bedtime is an effective natural cure for sleep apnea.

3. Breathing through mouth may lead to certain structural abnormalities in the facial area, resulting in sleep apnea. In order to treat sleep apnea naturally, change sleep positions to ensure regular breathing.

You can tie a ball in socks and tie it across your waist such that you will change your position regularly.

Additionally, you should avoid sleeping on the back and try sleeping on your side.

4. Certain medication such as tranquilizers and sleeping pills is known to relax breathing muscles in the back of your throat, interfering with breathing.

Check with your doctor if you are taking any medication for allergies, depression or anxiety and have sleep apnea.

5. You can also cure apnea sleep by using a saline nasal spray to help keep your nasal passages open.

However, speak with your doctor first before using nasal decongestants or antihistamines. Such medications are generally recommended only for short-term use.

Very often sleep apnea will disappear with a few lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking and alcohol, as well as losing the extra weight. However, if home remedies do not stop sleep apnea naturally, it is very important to seek medical advice so that treatment can be arranged to avoid more serious health problems.
