9 Best Gift Ideas for Elderly Parents

By Jill Peterson

Getting the “perfect” gift for an elderly parent can be a nerve-wracking task for some people. Modern and high tech gadgets are usually too complicated and confusing to use; while giving money seems to be an appropriate solution, it may sometimes appear rude. So what can you do to show your love and thoughts when your parents have nothing lacking materially?

If you’re anything like me, you prefer to keep it simple to express your heartfelt appreciation and care for your parents, then look for gifts that are both practical and sentimental. You can start by exploring products or services that your parent uses on a continuous basis, or will enjoy it for a long time. It need not be a crazily expensive item but something that touches deeply. Here are some ideas to help you decide on what to buy for an elderly mom or dad.

Best Gift Ideas for Old People

1. Everyone loves to look good no matter what their age so why not surprise your parents with a visit to the hair salon to have their hair done? It could be a simple haircut or some chemical work to touch up greying roots, or maybe a pampering nail manicure.

2. Gather your siblings to chip in to pay for a large purchase your parents cannot afford, such as a plasma television, new car, or hearing aids.

3. Offer to pay your parents’ utilities bill or grocery bill for a month. This comes in really helpful especially when electricity rates and food prices are soaring by the day.

4. Sponsor your parents a membership at the gym, or sign them up for taichi classes or gardening workshops. The idea here is to enrol them for activities that they would enjoy.

5. Most of us are always busy with either work or our own family so spending quality time with our parents seems almost impossible. What I would suggest you do is to organise a “date night” specially for you and your parents, and take them to their favorite restaurant for a nice meal or to a concert or play.

6. If you are a creative person who enjoy making unique handmade gifts, try putting together a scrapbook. A scrapbook is very therapeutic for parents who are losing their memory slowly.

Find old pictures and take the time to put them all down in a timeline. Include significant events such as weddings, the birth of their first grandchild, childhood photos, and family gatherings. Photos of friends, old neighbours and even pets will also add interest to your project. Don’t forget to write your thoughts and a few meaningful words about the photos.

7. Alternatively, put together a DVD or videotape scrapbook. If your parent’s eyesight is not good enough to look at a regular scrapbook, then this is a perfect option.

8. You might want to consider purchasing music CDs from their era. It can be oldies or instrumental pieces. My mother is a avid fan of Elvis Presley and she loves the entire CD collection that I bought many years ago. It never failed to get her singing and dancing with my father. It was an absolutely loving sight, a very beautiful moment for both my parents.

9. The other affordable gift idea for old people is to have a precious photograph restored. If you have a photo that your folks would love, but it has been damaged by water, torn, or discolored, check into photo restoration to bring it back to life. It will surely become a priceless family possession, passing down to the next generation.

Whatever you decide to buy or do for your parents, the most important thing to remember is to follow your heart. Put a lot of thought and love into your gift, and you will never go wrong.

Most of the time, your parents are happy to know that they are still important to you. And, that’s your best gift for elderly parents.
