Homemade Lip Scrub and Mask

By Tiffany Moore

They are everywhere – on magazines, TV commercials and billboards. Luscious, pouty and full. What am I talking about? Sensual lips that make men swoon and girls quiver with envy.

But the problem is, not all women are naturally endowed with juicy puckers.

The skin of the lips is nothing like the skin on the rest of your body that is capable of hydrating and regulating moisture. Lip skin is very delicate and thin, about 3-5 layers thick versus 16 layers on your face. Plus the lips have no sebaceous glands or lipids, meaning that they cannot naturally produce oil to protect themselves from drying and cracking caused by environmental factors.

If your puckers are less than sensational, fret not. Rejuvenate them with these total moisturizing homemade beauty recipes – lip scrub and mask – right now, and get attractive kissable lips that rival those of Megan Fox, Rihanna and Scarlett Johansson. The ingredients needed are insanely cheap and are very likely in your kitchen this very minute.

Milk contains lactic acid which is an alpha hydroxy acid that soften dead skin while providing intensive moisturizing actions to leave dry rough skin smoother and more radiant.

Butter has Vitamins A and E, both are known for their skin rejuvenating properties and hence widely used in dermatology and cosmetology to help reduce the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.

Sugar is included in this DIY lip scrub recipe to serve as a natural skin exfoliator to remove dull skin surface and bring dry chapped lips back to life.

Olive oil feeds dry flaky lips with antioxidants (Vitamin E) to keep them deeply hydrated and rosy.

Marvelously hydrating honey works as a natural humectant to help attract and trap moisture, lending to plumper kissable lips in no time.

Aside from Vitamin A, carrot will also supply you with good amounts of Vitamin C, which helps increase collagen production and prevent the signs of premature aging. Furthermore, carrot juice is said to help fade blemishes and is often used in combination with plain yogurt to brighten dull complexion or minimize the appearance of old acne scars. A highly effective home remedy that can also used to treat uneven skin tone on lips.

Besides pampering your puckers with these home beauty treatments once a week, there are a number of things you can do to stop and prevent peeling lips in future.

Bad habits such as constant chewing, licking of lips, and smoking are among the most common culprits of dry flaky skin on lips. Chemicals in cigarettes can deplete natural moisture from your lips while evaporation of water (and enzymes) in saliva can rob natural protective oils, causing dryness and not to mention, soreness as well.

In addition, there are a couple of don’ts when it comes to avoiding chapped lips naturally. They include don’t hold metal objects in your mouth such as paper clips and staple refills. Don’t lick envelopes and don’t suck on citrus fruit rinds like oranges, lemons or grapefruits.

Excessive sun exposure especially in hot summer months, or cold wind and dry air in frigid winter days, can be a probable reason why you have chapped peeling lips. So always use a good quality rich lip balm that has moisture-binding ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. Emollients such as lanolin or squalene can also help replace the natural moisturizing factors that lips have lost through harsh weather conditions.

On top of that, you want to make sure it contains SPF 15 sunscreen to protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Try budget-friendly Neutrogena Lip Moisturizer SPF 15 or Badger SPF 15 Unscented Lip Balm Stick. If you love a slight hint of color, I suggest the pricier Kiehl's lip balm SPF 15 (Hue 58B or 30G).

Alternatively, hydrate with a touch of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly throughout the day if you are going to be indoors (heating and air conditioning). Any Vitamin E rich oil – wheatgerm, olive, coconut, jojoba, almond – will also do the trick. Dab a bit of beetroot juice on lips before bedtime, and wake up smiling with beautiful rosy lips the next morning!

Another simple tip to keep lips baby soft and alluringly luscious is drink plenty of water to thoroughly hydrate your skin, including lips. Aim for 8-10 glasses per day to stop lips from drying out easily. Fruit juices may not be an acceptable substitute due to its high fructose content, which consumed in excess can contribute to unwanted weight gain. Instead, try unsweetened herbal teas or add fresh mint and lemon slices to a pitcher of plain water if you like a bit of flavor. Caffeine-free rosehip tea, being rich in iron, is particularly helpful for those craving for rosy and pink lips.

Very importantly, keep in mind that persistent problem of scaly lips (and cracks in the corner of the mouth) is associated with Vitamin B2 deficiency, so it might be worth considering vitamin tablets containing 10-50mg of this vitamin to see if it improves.

Homemade Sugar Lip Scrub Recipe

1 teaspoon unsalted butter (soften at room temperature for 10-15 minutes)

1 teaspoon milk (whole or full fat milk is recommended if you have extremely dry lips that peel)

1 teaspoon fine granulated white sugar

How to make sugar lip scrub at home:

1. Place butter and milk in a small bowl. Mix well until well combined. Gradually stir in sugar.

2. Smear mixture over lips and gently rub with your ring finger in circular motions for a minute or so. Rinse off with warm water and pat dry.

Homemade Lip Mask Recipe

1 tablespoon unsalted butter (soften at room temperature for 10-15 minutes)

½ teaspoon extra virgin olive oil (or coconut oil)

1 teaspoon honey (use active manuka honey to heal cracked lips)

1 teaspoon fresh carrot juice

How to make lip mask at home:

1. Place butter in a bowl. Drizzle in olive oil and mix well.

2. Add honey and stir together. Finally pour carrot juice into mixture.

3. Apply DIY lip mask on lips for about 10 minutes before you wipe off with tissue or a cotton pad.

Note: You can keep any unused portion in an air-tight container and store in the refrigerator for no more than 5 days. Avoid sugar scrub if lips are peeling or chapped. It’s ok to use after they are healed.
