Homemade Mud or Clay Face Mask Recipes

For many women, it usually means smearing outrageously pricey potions over ageing skin and multiple spa visits to reverse wrinkles and other skin imperfections. If you ever had clarifying mud facials or therapeutic clay body masks at a spa, you know they don’t come cheap. That’s because mud (French green clay , also known as illite or sea clay) contains potent ingredients – minerals and active enzymes –  that provide a wealth of amazing skin-conditioning benefits to skin.

 

Mud helps gently exfoliate the skin to buff away dead cells that can clog pores and dull your skin while absorbing excess sebum and impurities, which are culprits behind acne breakouts. It also helps shrink pore size while deep cleaning and tightening skin, giving you a rejuvenated more “lifted” appearance.

 

Furthermore, the humble mud will also stimulate blood and lymph circulation, allowing your skin to repair and rejuvenate itself for a radiantly glowing, spotlessly clear complexion.

 

These homemade mud face masks work just as well as any expensive facial products in the market, for only a fraction of the price. Most of the ingredients needed in these recipes are probably sitting in your pantry right now or can be purchased at most health food store cheaply, locally or online.

 

In fact, you don’t have to follow these homemade clay facial recipes to the T. You can use anything to create your personalized mud or clay masks. For example, if you are concerned about skin pigmentation, use lemon juice. Lemon acts as a natural bleaching agent to effectively lighten dark spots such as freckles, age or liver spots. It is also good if your face tends to get oily during midday and starts to appear lifelessly dim.

 

The thing to remember is to start with a few tablespoons Fuller’s earth or dry clay powder and then add your ingredients from there. So relax and enjoy your facial in the comfort of your own home!

 

I would also like to mention a few mineral-enriched mud masks that are really worth your money so don’t forget to check them out. Your skin will feel comfortably hydrated, wonderfully firmer and re-energised!

 

 

 

How to Make a Homemade Mud Mask

You need Fuller’s earth*, glycerin, the juice of 1 tomato, and some rose water (sensitive skin).

Other suitable liquids to use include distilled water, spring water, witch hazel (oily skin), aloe vera juice, egg white (firming), egg yolk (nourishing), or manuka honey (moisturizing).

 

 

Instructions to make mud mask:

1. Mix 1 bag of Fuller’s earth with 1 tablespoon glycerin, tomato juice, and 1-2 tablespoons rose water or the liquid of your choice. The mud mask should be thick and pasty.

 

2. Apply on a clean face, avoiding the eye area, and leave on for 15-20 minutes, until it is dry.

 

3. Rinse off completely with warm water. Alternatively, you may want to remove the mud mask and wash your face with milk instead.

 

4. Apply your favorite toner and moisturizer.

 

 

 

Homemade Clay Mask for Dehydrated or Dry Skin

You need 8-9 tablespoons clay powder, ¼ cup cucumber (peeled and chopped), ¼ cup avocado flesh, 3 tablespoons finely powdered oats (for mild peeling), 3 tablespoons distilled water, 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 teaspoon organic honey.

 

 

Instructions to make clay mask:

1. Puree the cucumber and avocado flesh in a food processor until smooth. Add water and lemon juice. Then add all the remaining ingredients except clay powder.

 

2. Pour out the mixture from the blender into a small bowl, and then whisk in the clay.

 

3. Apply the clay mask to a clean face, avoiding the eye area, and leave it on for 20-30 minutes.

 

4. Rinse off with warm water. Apply your favorite toner and moisturizer.

 

For best results, use homemade mud or clay mask at least once a week.
