How to Avoid and Prevent Cataracts

By Diane Hanson

Cataracts is a common eye condition that develop as we age. It occurs when the lens of your eye turns cloudy and impairs your vision partially or even totally. While some of us develop cataracts at a relatively early age, there are people in their nineties that show no sign of cataracts at all. Here are several things which you can do to avoid cataracts and prevent cataracts from getting worse.

How Can Cataracts Be Prevented?

1. It has been proven a lifetime exposure to sunlight can cause cataracts to form. People who live in sunny climates and those working outside under the hot sun seem to be more prone to developing cataracts at an earlier age.

Your best defense is to use a pair of ultraviolet protective sunglasses or a hat with a brim to shade your eyes.

Wearing protective sunglasses will also reduce your risk of contracting skin cancer around your eyes.

2. There is a strong link between smoking and cataracts development.  Smoking produces a high amount of oxidative stress and free radicals that damage the lens and membranes of your eyes.

If you smoke, quit. It is the best way to prevent cataracts. Moreover, your overall health will also improve significantly the moment you stop smoking for good.

3. You can also avoid the early formation of cataracts by eating the right foods. To support your eye health, eat foods that are rich in antioxidants such as green leafy vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

Research has shown that antioxidants fight free radicals and women who ate the most vegetables as well as fruits reduced their risks of cataracts by up to 15%.

In addition, increase your intake of Vitamin E as it protects your lens from free radicals. Good sources of Vitamin E include sunflower seeds and almonds, or you may want to take a Vitamin E supplement if you don’t consume these foods on a regular basis.

You should avoid foods that generate free radicals such as fried, charcoal barbecued, and smoked foods. Also, do not eat rancid oils or foods containing hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils.

Early detection of symptoms of cataracts can save your eyesight. If you are sixty years and above, a comprehensive eye examination is recommended once every two years. This will help your eye care specialist to detect eye diseases caused by aging, including cataracts.
