How to Make Hair Grow Faster

By Tiffany Moore

We cannot deny that long healthy hair adds charm and elegance to a woman. However, with increasing length, hair is also more prone to damage and breakage. There are many factors that weakens your hair and cause it to fall out. While there are no shortcuts to make your hair grow faster and longer, there are some really simple things which you can do to grow the best hair you can quickly.

What Can I Do to Make My Hair Grow Faster?

Keep your hair clean with regular shampooing and conditioning. The reason for this is because a buildup of oil secretion from scalp, dirt, dead skin cells and other substances you put on hair – hairspray, mousse and gel – can contribute to oily scalp, which in turn can clog hair follicles and slow down healthy hair growth.

Keeping your scalp clean pays off big time. Not only will it leave you feeling fresh, it will also help prevent blemishes (pimples and acne) as well as irritations (yeast and fungus) that can inhibit the rate of hair growth and may even cause significant hair loss in very severe cases.

In addition, well-conditioned hair helps reduce the loss of length due to breakage and at the same time, prevent split ends from happening. Long hair and spilt ends – definitely not a pretty look.

So it brings us to the next question, how often should you wash your hair? The frequency of hair washing depends on a couple of things such as the nature of your hair and scalp, the environment you live in and the lifestyle you lead. For example, if you are an active person who enjoy outdoor exercising in warmer months and have uncontrollably greasy fine hair, then it’s highly recommended that you shampoo your hair everyday. If not, wash it every other day so that the shampoo won’t strip the natural oils from your hair. On the other hand, if you have normal to dry hair, wash less often, say maybe once or twice a week.

And if you always leave your hair open instead of tying up in a ponytail, or tucking under a scarf, or cap, you probably also need a daily wash because it accumulates more dust and dirt. One quick word about washing your hair everyday. Don’t scrub too hard with your nails. You want to gently massage your scalp using your fingertips to promote blood circulation and stimulate faster hair growth. More importantly, rinse with cool or lukewarm water. Hot water is bad for hair as it robs the natural oils on your scalp that protect hair from becoming dry and brittle.

Your choices of shampoos and conditoners can also play a critical role in growing your hair faster. Using the wrong kind of shampoo can trigger an allergic reaction, causing unbearable itching and flaking, and hence may hinder faster hair growth. As a general rule, always use good quality products that are suitable for your hair type.

Nourish and strengthen dry hair with an ultra-rich, protein-based shampoo like Redken Extreme Shampoo or try Keratase Satin Range. Lemon-based shampoos are ideal for oily hair since lemon does a remarkable job of naturally removing excess oil while clarifying the scalp. Consider Avalon Organics Lemon Clarifying Shampoo or Lavera Lemon Milk Shampoo.

It may also be worthwhile to change brands or alternate the shampoo and conditioner you use every month to combat build up on hair follicles and product tolerance.

Regular scalp massages are a must when it comes to growing hair faster naturally. It brings blood flow and oxygen to the scalp and feeds the follicles with essential nutrients needed to grow hair faster. Lightly rub your fingers through your scalp in circular motion for a couple minutes before bedtime to encourage hair to grow faster naturally.

My other best advice for growing long strong hair is to apply nutrient-dense oil such as rosemary oil, grape seed oil, olive oil, or coconut oil to your scalp every second day. Sweet almond oil is particularly helpful for stimlating hair growth as it has high amounts of Vitamin E, magnesium and potassium to soften and lubricate hair, leading to stronger, more pliable strands of hair. This means your locks are less likely to break and will grow to your waist in no time! For optimum results, heat the oil of your choice in the microwave for 20-30 seconds, or until warm before application. It’s also a good iead to wrap a towel around your head to enhance absorption.

Alternatively, flip your head upside down for about 5 minutes daily, if possible. Why? It is widely believed that this gets the blood flowing to your scalp, thereby naturally stimulating follicles to grow healthier hair faster.

Using hot rollers, a blow dryer or a curling iron is not a good thing to do if you want to speed up hair growth. When hair is exposed to too much heat, it gets damaged and hence will affect how quickly your hair can grow. The speed of hair growth is about a quarter to half an inch in length per month so the less your hair is abused the longer it will be.

Similarly, using harsh hair dyes in excess can weaken hair roots, causing breakage which makes it difficult to maintain longer hair. If you want to make your hair grow faster, avoid frequent hair coloring and keep your usage of heating appliances to only a couple of times a week. Allowing your hair to dry naturally is a much smarter option.

What you eat can influence how fast your hair can grow. There are certain foods that will actually make your tresses grow faster and more luxuriant. Make sure that your everyday diet has plenty of dark green leafy vegetables (kale, broccoli, spinach and peas) and dark pigmented fruits (cherries, cranberries, blueberries and plums). These foods are very rich in Vitamin C and bioflavonoids, which are antioxidants that help improve blood circulation to the scalp and accelerate hair growth.

You may also want to take Vitamin supplements, specifically Biotin and B-Complexes – Vitamins B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin B9 (folic acid) and B12 – to make your hair grow quickly. This is especially helpful if you are experiencing thinning hair. Interestingly, biotin which can be found in cauliflower, bananas and carrots, also help keep premature graying at bay.

Besides, a healthy diet that include good amounts of high quality protein (lean chicken, turkey and fish) and omega 3 fatty acids (salmon, walnuts and flaxseeds) can help improve the appearance of your hair – thick, glossy and frizz-free.

Aim for a low fat diet because excessive saturated fats (and sugar) consumption can contribute to hormonal imbalance, which can lead to temporary hair loss.  Also, avoid going on crash diets as dramatic weight loss can weaken hair and trigger hair loss.
