About Niche Topics

I've heard a lot of good stuff about gram flour (chickpea flour) from my Indian friends. They rave about its skin whitening benefits, how it quickly calms acne inflammation and keeps the skin clear. I'd love to make my own skin lightening face masks at home with it but I'm not sure how to use gram flour for skin. Can you please help me out here? Many thanks! – Melanie, Colorado.

8 Natural Gram Flour (Besan) Skin Whitening Face Masks

Hi Melanie,

Whether you call it gram flour, chickpea flour, garbanzo flour, besan, or beshon,  I absolutely love this stuff. It's incredibly cheap, super effective and highly versatile! I've used it many times in many different homemade face mask and scrub recipes, and I've to say it does work like magic! Gram flour really lightens acne scars and dark marks, and makes the skin complexion visibly fairer and more luminous. Moreover, it does a petty good job of reducing the appearance dark circles under eyes naturally too.

There are countless ways to use gram flour in DIY natural skincare recipes and home remedies. I've listed a few that are not only effective for skin whitening and skin lightening, but will also help soothe inflamed acne skin and relieve itchy pimples.

How to Use Gram Flour (Besan) to Lighten Skin/ Whiten Skin

1. This gram flour and turmeric face mask is very good for lightening acne scars as well as making your skin look brighter and feel instantly smoother. It can be applied all over your body to remove dark spots or brown spots caused by too much sun exposure.

In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons gram flour, ¼ tablespoon turmeric powder and 2 tablespoons fresh milk. Mix well to create a smooth and fine paste. Apply evenly on your face and neck. Then wash off it completely with lukewarm water after 20-30 minutes.

2. Combined with lemon juice and almonds, this homemade face pack/scrub has potent skin whitening/skin lightening properties. It naturally lightens dark spots and even skin tone while nourishing your skin.

Soak 4-6 almonds in water overnight. In the morning, peel off the skin and grind 1½ teaspoons gram flour, 1 teaspoon  milk and four drops fresh lemon juice to make a paste. Spread on your face and leave it on for a few minutes to allow the bleach to take effect. Rinse it off while you gently scrub your face.

3. If you've dry flaky skin, I'd suggest you try out this face mask using gram flour and milk cream, which restores lost moisture to keep dry skin well hydrated. It's also excellent for moisturizing overly dry and wrinkly hands in winter.

Add 2-3 drops fresh lemon juice to 1 tablespoon chickpea flour, 1 teaspoon milk cream (or olive oil ) and ½ teaspoon honey. Mix all ingredients to form a paste. Smear it over your face and let it dry naturally. Rinse off thoroughly with water.

4. Not only will it whiten and lighten dark spots on your face, this natural home remedy also works for other dark skin area such as neck, underarms, knees, elbows and groin.

Mix lemon juice and gram flour. Apply on your knees, elbows, underarms, neck and groin area to whiten them.

5. To use gram flour as a soap-free face wash, mix 1 teaspoon each of turmeric powder, milk cream, sandalwood powder and gram flour.

6. Egg whites are best for people with oily skin type as it can draw out excess oil from the pores while tightening pores and temporarily lifting the skin.

Place 1 egg white in a small bowl and whisk with a fork. Add 2 tablespoons besan and mix until well combined. Apply egg white besan mask on your face, carefully carefully avoiding the delicate eye area. Wash off with cold water after 15 minutes.

7. If your skin feels extremely oily in summer months, or you've combination skin, rosewater is recommended. Rosewater helps control excess facial oil secretion by maintaining the skin's pH balance, leaving your skin feeling clean and fresh.

Mix 2 tablespoons manuka honey with 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice and 1 teaspoon rosewater. Apply over your whole face, and leave on for 5-10 minutes before you rinse it out.

8. If you've a sudden pimple breakout before your big date, or you want to remove unsightly skin blemishes and prevent new ones from forming, then this cooling facial mask is just right for you.

Make a paste by mixing 2 tablespoons curd and 1 tablespoon gram flour. Apply generously onto cleansed face for 10-15 minutes and gently rub off to remove the mask. For best results, repeat every 2 days.

If you don't have curd, use cucumber juice instead.

You can buy gram flour at most Asian and Indian grocery stores, or you can make your own at home from dried chickpeas.
