I am one of those unlucky people who often get bitten by mozzies during the summer months and have lots of dark scars all over my legs and arms from the bites. I am so embarrassed to wear skirts or shorts because my very fair skin makes these dark spots stand out even more. I am curious about bio oil but would like to know if there are any good creams/products that will also quickly fade mosquito bite marks. Will home remedies help remove them too? – Kristina, California.

What Helps Fade Mosquito Bite Scars?

Hi Kristina,

I've been eaten alive by swarms of hunger mozzies while holidaying in Phuket Thailand with my family so I know just how you feel about being the only one prone to mosquito bites.

Mosquito bites rarely leave scars on your skin, if they're left to heal. You may not realize it, but every time you scratch a mosquito bite, you run the risk of infecting the open wound (bite) with dirty finger nails. Also resist the temptation to pick at the scabs as it may cause bleeding, which will lead to slower healing time and deeper, possibly permanent scarring.

To avoid potential mosquito bite scarring, you have to treat the bite as soon as possible after being bitten. Apply an over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream, or put an ice pack on the affected area. Doing so will help reduce itching, redness and swelling associated with insect bites, and hence stop the itch-scratch cycle.

What Creams/Products Fade Mosquito Bite Scars Quickly?

As far as I'm concerned, Bio oil works like a charm to remove dark spots from mosquito and bug bites. I applied the oil on bite marks 3 times a day, massaging in a circular motion until fully absorbed, about 5 minutes. After using bio oil religiously for about 2-3 weeks, I noticed the dark spots became much lighter and my skin felt softer too.

You can buy Bio oil at most leading drug stores, or purchase it online. I bought from Amazon, where they regularly run offers.

Pure Vitamin E oil, rosehip seed oil, or any creams that have cocoa butter or aloe vera in them will also reduce scarring by improving scar tissue, which in turn helps fade your mosquito bite marks. Another plus, they’re great for softening and moisturizing your skin.

You can also use creams that contain Hydroquinone, AHA or BHA (popularly known as kojic acid, ascorbic acid, lactic acid, arbutin) to help get rid of mosquito bite scars. Try Mederma, which is clinically proven to soften, smooth and reduce the appearance of scars. A friend swears that it seriously helped fade old mosquito bite scars that were left behind decades ago! Go to mederma.com for product details.

My answer to your second question – will home remedies help remove mosquito bite marks – is YES, if used consistently. However they can take a longer time to make dark marks go away, maybe a few weeks or even months, depending on your reaction to the bites, your natural skin tone as well as the age of the mosquito bite scars, to name a few.

If bite marks are older, very dark or don't respond well to home treatments, my advice is visit your doctor or dermatologist. He can prescribe a topical hydroquinone or retinoid cream to treat mosquito bite scars, or recommend a chemical peel to encourage new tissue growth and help dark scars fade more quickly.

Use one home remedy at a time and see if it works for you or not. If it doesn't do the trick, move on to something else. Hopefully, you're able to remove mosquito bite marks on your legs and arms at home without going to the doctor.

I'd also suggest you use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on areas where you've scarring because sun damage can darken scars.

Mosquito Bite Scar Removal Home Remedies

1. Dab freshly squeezed lemon juice on the dark spots, and massage into your skin. Lemon juice is a natural skin bleaching agent that packs a wallop of Vitamin C, which we all know will help skin to regrow and heal the scar quickly.

2. Other than lemon juice, tomato and papaya can also help get rid of marks left behind by mosquito bites. Simply rub the flesh of tomato, or papaya on the affected areas, and leave on for about 10 minutes and rinse off. For best results, apply twice a day until the dark spots disappear. Both tomato and papaya are renowned for their natural skin lightening power.

3. Buttermilk or sour milk can also make mosquito marks go away naturally. Apply a buttermilk-dipped cotton ball on dark spots and let it soak into your skin. The lactic acid in buttermilk works as a natural exfoliant to gently peel away dead skin cells that make scars appear dark.

4. Another inexpensive mosquito bite marks removal home treatment is potatoes. Just rub thin slices of raw potato on your skin, concentrating on areas that you want to lighten.

Alternatively, grate a raw potato, squeeze out the juice and chill in your fridge. You can also add a bit of fresh lemon juice or lime juice for extra skin lightning action. Apply potato juice using cotton pads and wash after 15 minutes. Potatoes contain enzymes that are helpful in fading dark scars.
